Le Saint Étienne

I'm clearly not the only one who's had a bad experience at this establishment. Reading the numerous reviews, I recognize exactly what I experienced: an owner described as unfriendly, haughty, unpleasant, and sometimes disrespectful to customers. Unfortunately, I can confirm this impression. Some time ago, it was late, and we saw a sign indicating that the restrooms were accessible for €1. A friend went in and asked if she could use them. The manager told her she had to buy something, which she accepted without question. When she didn't come out, I went in myself. I simply asked, very politely, "Hello, do you have restrooms?" The manager replied curtly, "No, we don't have restrooms." His tone was particularly haughty. When I left, I learned that my friend was actually... in the restroom. So I went back and calmly asked him why he had lied to me. Instead of explaining the situation, he cut me off, saying he had "nothing to give people" and wasn't obligated to allow access to the restrooms. Of course, no one can force him, but in that case, why clearly display "Toilets: €1"? And above all, why respond to a potential customer that way? The discussion lasted about ten minutes. He explained that dozens of people asked him this question every day. I simply replied that it was part of his job and that a little courtesy cost nothing. He retorted that he'd been doing this job for 30 years and that some 20-year-old wasn't going to teach him how to do it. The most shocking part was some of his remarks. At one point, he said to me, "You Turks, you're always the same, with no respect." Then he added that, in his opinion, everyone was the same. However, a few moments later, a customer came in. By mistake, he offered her fries even though she hadn't ordered them, then told her, "Don't worry, they're on the house." Everyone is free to offer what they want, but this clearly shows that not all customers are treated equally. He also criticized me for coming in speaking Turkish instead of French, even though it had absolutely nothing to do with our conversation. I found this remark inappropriate. I won't comment on the food, as I didn't end up eating anything. I prefer to be honest rather than invent criticisms. On the other hand, regarding the welcome and the manager's behavior, my experience was extremely poor. Given the number of reviews reporting the same problems, I now understand that I'm far from being an isolated case. For my part, I will never set foot in that place again and I do not recommend this establishment to those seeking a respectful and professional welcome.

Despite the heat, and despite the crowds at times, the owner is very friendly and always has a smile and a touch of humor. The staff is kind and attentive, and I've never been disappointed by the doner kebabs, their meat, or the seasonings.
